Contemporary Assessment of Young Children: Issues and Practice Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is the instructor at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Education for a summer seminar on the Contemporary Assessment of Young Children. This course focuses the conceptual and theoretical foundations needed for conducting early childhood assessments. Building on these concepts and participants’ experience in the discipline, students will learn about appropriate procedures for assessment of young children from birth through the primary ages. An array of approaches to developmental assessment will be covered, along with a critical review of strengths and limitations of early childhood assessment measures. The focus will be measues of general development, cognitive, readiness, and pre-academic measures, with supplementary coverage of social-emotional and behavioural assessment procedures for students in the early years. Students will learn appropriate assessment strategies and how to be responsible consumers of assessment findings, in order to assist in the development of effective program plans.
