Hosted by The Wishing Star Developmental Clinic at Eaton Arrowsmith School White Rock Campus

Proudly presenting a 6-part workshop series: Through the Child’s Eyes with Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, R. Psych.

This series is specially created for every “big person” out there – moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, caregivers, teachers – who are growing up young children 0-8 years of age. Created and delivered by Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, Registered Psychologist and experienced, dynamic speaker, the six workshops in this series are meant to stir in each participant the wonder of seeing the world Through the Child’s Eyes. Dr. Lapointe firmly believes that if each of us big people can find ourselves looking out at the world, experiencing and knowing the world, and feeling and responding to the world the way a child does, we are infinitely more capable of responding to children in ways that resonate with the science of development. That is, to do right by our children we need to see the world through their eyes.

Although this series will be sequentially presented in a manner that allows each workshop to build upon the content of previous workshops, each workshop is also “stand-alone” and does not require participation in the previous workshops.

Registration for each workshop in the series is now open! There are a limited number of seats available so early registration is strongly encouraged.

The Series

We are thrilled to present the second of six workshops in our 2012/2013 launch of the “Through the Child’s Eyes” series:

Part 2 of a 6 Part Series: Through the Child’s Eyes: Resistance & Tantrums

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Why is it that our children can so resist our direction? Why is it that sometimes the simplest request can lead to meltdowns and angry tears? And how is a parent meant to bring their child back into line in the face of such resistance? Especially when the parent is under the scornful, scrutinizing gaze of everyone else standing in the check-out line at the grocery store?! Perhaps surprisingly, the answers to these questions have nothing to do with discipline strategies and “parenting” techniques. Indeed, in some situations, such strategies and techniques actually end up either causing the resistance to increase and/or leading to other more troublesome challenges. Instead, the answer to understanding resistance in our children lays in understanding the relationship they have with us as their big people and further, in understanding how we can bring our children in for “soft” landings as they must cope with all those things in life that simply cannot be – the toy or treat or extended bedtime that they want but cannot have. In Resistance and Tantrums we will discuss ways of understanding and responding to our children’s resistance and upset that do not make the situation worse, but instead have us leading the way for our children to grow and develop into truly mature human beings.
